Description
This was inspired by...well take your pick! The Matrix, The Bourne Identity, Kill Bill, X-Men, Lara Croft, Highlander, Terminator 3, Underworld...all manner of films with women in tight leather!Anyway I settled on Highlander in the end, although it went through different stages when she had guns, normal eyes and pearlescant eyes.
Ref used for the pose.
Done in photoshop
I will link to a larger version as I had to crop this a lot width ways and it still lacks the detail of the original.Plus you can't tell on this but she is in a corridor...that is more obvious in the original too as its much wider.
Yay, now thats out the way I can try this dragon contest.1
Cheers

strong piece.
There are some minor things
that could be improved IMO.
Her forehead looks a bit too square,
you might round it off bit more with some soft shadows.
Her bellyholethingie (sorry dont know name in
proper english) is placed bit too high.
What I really like is the lighting, and overall
badassnes of her character.
Excellent + 9

Raescheeeil thanks a lot. I too have not seen a newly decapitated head but you maybe right...at least I think it may be too thick.

slickgreekgeo. I do think her face is a bit too smooth and could use more lines. As I said though its lost loads of detail due to downscaling...eyelashes, lip detail, eyebrow hair etc are lost in this version...I will post close ups. Much appreciated
05/21/06 @156
Cool work. You're definitely improving in making your characters look more natural. A lot of people, even with references manage to make their characters look stiff and awkward. So, props for that. I think she'd look cool with long flowing hair, although it'd probably be impractical for a ninja-assassin girl. Keep it up!

nice work +9

You did an awsome job on the perspective on that poor guy in the background! and I agree with the second poster...she looks "delicious"

PS Your style and talent with digital media is really cacthing up to your analog skillz

NICE WORK Andy
that dead head could be more expressive...looks like he died in peace
and those blood drops needs more defination, just my opinion
but overall, GREAT EFFORT
psst i'd love to see more painterly works from u

Straight too favourites!
Maybe opening the eyes and mouth on the dead head there would give
better effect of fear? I don’t know.
Anyway, awesome work Andy!

BUT STOP USING GREYS IN YOUR SHADES!!!! Damnit man, honour the legacy of arenhaus.
05/21/06 @635
Definately lose the dripping blood, it's totally OTT and looks a little comical in an otherwise serious piece.
This next is not a crit...merely one of my many, many soapboxes:
When a human head is severed there is rarely any neck left hanging...the spine normally shatters where it attatches to the skull...it's weakest point...and any remaining flesh and muscle rolls up under the chin as the tension it's normally under (and what gives it it's shape) is released....If you ever need examples I can mail them to you...er?...that's photo's BTW not real heads!!
05/21/06 @684
05/21/06 @686
A-H I never caught what you said!!!!
Arne thanks, I know what you mean, I will deffo try not to have any greys in the next one lol
kaduflyer I was of the opinion after it was dont that the head didnt look realistic and the blood is OTT. I would deffo appreciate some references! I should have come to you in the first place, what with you being the horror dude on here!
Shyam! What did I say about that word 'Painterly'? I wont tell you again!!! ;-)
Everyone else thank you very much for taking the time to comment.

The foggy light effect is nice, but you should put the darker zones there, where there is something that can cast shadows.
And the blood dropping from the head looks completely weird.
Great picture.
05/21/06 @808
I don't know anything or seen an actual decapitated head but this one looks more like a manequin's head
so...how about that breast feeding issue? LOL

i really liked the well balanced walk of the heroine
and loved the detail on the hand thats holding the head
great piece all together and my only lil crit is the light source
its a bit distracting placed between the head and the handle of the sword
it attracts too much attention away from the piece
+9/10 man
keep them rolling

You said that you think her face is too smooth, but I don't think so. In fact it's the part I like the most. The killerlook in her face is pure evil and even her accentuated cheeks somehow suggest me that she's a cold-blooded murderer.
Excellent!

only problem I really have is the head she's carrying... more directly the blood coming from it...
unfortunately I dont really have any tips of what to make it look like...
I love the ground texturing and the perspective is for the most part spot on. only one possible error I see on this... and thats the dead mans arm... it looks like its coming out of his foot... I think maybe its extended too far from the torso?
other than that I really dig it....
great stuff as always...

love it except of three things:
the head (imo it makes the idea a little too obvious), the glare (blocking it by the swords and her body made it a little more symbolic, too), and the textures on the light and floor (seem a little too clean imo)
but especially the smooth pose plus the expression rock
05/26/06 @969
The more I look at this the more I don't like it now lmao. Oh well on to the next one.
